Fair warning first, I am a huge fan of Warhammer 40k and thus, my views and my impressions when playing this game were very influenced by my background as 40k fan. I will however, do my best to be objective in my review.
SpaceMarine is a classic action shooter à la Gear of Wars in many ways. There’s a horde of baddies that need a good thumping and you’re here to deliver said thumping as a genetically engineered superman. Nothing super fancy, just plain old violence set in the far future. The story is nice enough and it does the job at getting you from spot A to B.
SpaceMarine distinguish itself on two main points for me. First, it is incredibly fidel to the Warhammer 40k universe. If there ever was a game that tried to be faithful to the source material this is the one. THQ truly impresses me here. If you’re curious to see what 40k is all about, this is the game. If only for that, the game gets a warm recommendation for any fan.
The second is the emphasis on close combat. Where in other shooters close combat is relegated to a role of desperate situation or sneaky kill, here it’s an integral part of the game. Enemies will close on you and you will be forced to fight hand to hand. Luckily the close combat system is well done so it’s not a chore and it can be pretty enjoyable especially when you get your hands on a thunderhammer.
As for the rest of the game it’s pretty much standard fare. The graphics are good, but not great, the pacing is nice and it’s just long enough to enjoy yourself without having too many repetitive steps. All in all it’s a solid game, but nothing ground breaking.
It sucks, it’s laggy, it’s unimaginative, I hated it.
The monkey loved:
-Fidelity to the 40k universe
-How badass the space marines are.
The monkey liked:
–Solid action shooter
-Nice enough story but a bit predictable
The monkey disliked
–Could have used a bit more story exposition… but that’s just a very minor gripe
The monkey truly wonders WTF went on
–The multiplayer part! It so awful I don’t want to think about it.
The monkey verdict
Buy if you’re a warhammer 40k fan, wait for the bargain bin if you like action shooters. If you’re in it for the multiplayer, stay away.
