Lately, it seems some of the MMORPG sites, I read on a regular basis (not blogs), all talk so much about upcoming MMO games. It’s like the end of this year we’re in limbo. I don’t know about you but I’m a bit tired of hearing about some of these games and they’re not even released yet! How much do I need to know before I play it? Either I play it or I don’t and if you keep shoving these games down my throat.. you can shove them where the sun doesn’t shine!
Don’t get me wrong I love reading about upcoming MMO games but I don’t love to read about upcoming releases when it’s going to be at -least- over a year in development while they try to bait us along. I’m not going to put stock into something I can’t experience or get that excited about something so far ahead. I’ve tried and it just doesn’t work.
I really think the hype sort of jades these games for me, in a sense. It started with Warhammer, the so called WoW killer and ever since we’ve all been getting hyped over this and that MMO and what happens? They fade into the background, another wallflower MMO. What’s going to be different about these new games in 2011? Don’t freaking tell me, show me. Let me see for myself. The hype makes for high expectations, setting a game up for a huge fall if it doesn’t live up to it. Many of them going into financial trouble and I think part of that is due to setting themselves up so high, in the first place.
There are some really great games out already, we just tend to overlook them blinded by all this hype of what’s to come. We burn ourselves out sticking with the tried and true waiting to hear more about this game or that until the day of release where we patiently wait on reviews or try it ourselves. Then we forget about it and it becomes one of those we won’t play. Telling each other, ‘Ha, and they thought they were going to crush WoW!’
There are so many games out and some of them are fantastic while others are mediocre or just plain suck but what we do have is a lot of choices. Years ago the hype wasn’t as big as it is today we didn’t have choices of games to snub. We had a few choices and we were happily playing along. Now we fall all over ourselves with these games that are not even going to be released in the near future and ignore all the great choices we have. Sure I want some new MMO games to play but don’t expect me to get all bright eyed and bushy tailed a year ahead of time on a game I could not even like upon release.
Has the hype spoiled us into wanting more, more, more? Do you enjoy reading about a game the whole time it’s in development? Do you like the hype? As you can tell I’m not fond of the hype. I want to hear about what I can play now or the near future…. Unless, of course, it’s Everquest Next 😉
Until the monkey returns from the dungeon I’ll continue entertaining you with my rants and raves, thanks for reading!
