It took 8 days for Drew to go from FF14 is great to FF14 is pure rubbish… it took me 6 days. How did I get to that conclusion? By asking myself a simple question, would I be playing this game if it was called something else than Final Fantasy? The answer was a resounding no.
This game has been getting bad press from the start. The media’s been murderous with it(check out Gametrailers review), blogs have called it broken and unfinished and this is a case where I will agree with the majority. But instead of calling it names for the rest of this post I’ll try to go over a few points.
Bugs and missing/incomplete features
I know, some will say it’s a new game and should not be expected to be perfect… I agree that some bugs can exist but not to the extent that FF14 has them. A quick list off the top of my head:
-Can’t alt-tab out of the without causing a crash
-Graphics options that causes crash
-Combat bugs where your strikes are not executed but still consume resources
-Crafting bug where you can lose mats but not get the chance to attempt the recipe
-… and the list goes on…
These are not the king of bug I expect out of a released product. There’s always compatibility bugs at release and those are unavoidable but basic bugs like not being able to alt-tab are a problem.
Then we have the missing/incomplete features.
-Non-implemented character creation options. At creation you have to choose a god and a date of birth for your character. These will have impact on your character but are not in the game yet so you have no way of knowing how you will be impacted by your choices. Would you like to spend months working on a character only to find out you gimped yourself by choosing the healer moon for your melee character?
-Cannot jump. You can’t jump… this is mind-boggling to me that a game would release without being able to jump.
-Incomplete retainers. Retainers are characters you hire to serve as a bank, sell your stuff and buy for you. Right now they can only buy what you currently possess… wich kinds of void the whole idea. SE have said to be working on them…
-Market wards. Incomplete…
-Game interface, a new level of hell all by itself. It’s incredibly buggy as well as being incomplete.
I’m skipping a lot of stuff that could be attributed to gameplay but that I still feel are in fact missing features.
Ahhhh exploration.. one of the selling points of the game and one I felt at first would be great. Until I actually started doing it. Simply put, the game has one set of terrain that is repeated all over the place, all the time. The color changes, they add trees or a few extra rocks but it’s the same all over the place. You quickly realize that there’s no exploration to be done, only experience the same terrain over and over again.
Besides the storyline quests that happen every 10 level there’s actually three daily quests in this game.
-Kill quest: kill X number of creatures
-Craft quest: craft X items
-Gather quest: gather X ressources
The creatures, items and resources will change but its the three exact same quests all the time and they play the same all the time. I know we could argue that a game like WoW is mostly only kill quests but at least they try to make them interesting by putting some meat around them. FF14 simply has you go to a camp of mob, kill a few of them and then your done.
It’s the same three daily quests all the time… The storyline quests are great, but one great quest every ten level doesn’t make good gameplay.
The game is getting uninstalled soon and I will probably never touch it again. Square Enix released an unfinished product that belong in 1998, not 2010. It’s buggy, it’s incomplete, it’s rehashed content. The only thing going for it are the music and graphics but those do not make an MMO.
Square Enix tried to bank on the nostalgia of gamers who grew up on Final Fantasy games like I did. They put all the bells and whistles of a Final Fantasy games but that’s all it is… bells and whistles. It’s the prettiest packaged piece of crap to ever be released.
One last word to anyone who wants to jump into the defence of this game. If this game was called something else than Final Fantasy? Would you still be playing it. If the answer is yes I wish you all the best.
