TSW journal, random musings on Solomon Islands

July 11, 2012 by lonomonkey

In keeping with the tradition I started in Lotro, I’ll try keeping a journal of my travels through the Secret World. Sorry if today’s post seems a bit disjointed but these are really my notes I took as I was playing. I wanted to do a more formal, train of thoughts post but real-life conspired to rob me of precious game time and my plan sorta fell through. There’s going to be some minor spoilers ahead so I’ll put most of the post after the break.

Best quest fight! Ever!

Demonic invasion are noisy

In the category “best lawl” moment, I have to give the prize to the poor man staying at the Overlook motel who’s just happens to have a full-blown demonic gate in the room just next to him. You’d think that having a portal to a demonic dimension would be enough to worry someone but not for this guy. This man main concerns is that it’s noisy! Nevermind the hordes of hell, the man wants to sleep and apparently a demonic invasion makes a lot of noise.

Go tell those damn teenage devils to shut up, the poor man needs his beauty sleep.

The boogeyman, best fight quest

Down in the savage cost you’ll start doing a series of quests around a haunted / possessed theme park and at one point you’ll face off against The boogeyman, one of the most interesting quest fight I have ever seen. See, you cannot beat this boss simply by doing more damage and doing the right rotation. No, this guy has phases to learn, abilities to dodge and a dance to learn. It’s exactly like a mini-raid boss right at the end of a quest chain and I loved it. It has been years since any quest made me fight a boss that actually felt like a boss.

Instances and group woes

It seems that TSW won’t escape one of the immutable laws of MMO gaming. No matter how great your game is, an awful group will make any instance a piss poor gaming experience. So far I completed the Polaris instance and tried to do Inferno. My Polaris run was as flawless as one could hope for. Great group, we finished the place quickly enough and even when we had a wipe due to a misunderstanding, people got back in and we downed the last boss. Great run.

Then Inferno has been fittingly enough, hell to complete. I’ve been in three groups all of which have been complete failures. The first one had an asshole that kept calling people name, the second had a leader who didn’t think having a healer or tanks was a necessity and the last one disbanded without a word after the third boss. Fun….

Still, if I take the groups out of the equation both instances have been fun. I don’t know exactly how they pulled it off but the instances feel lengthy enough but are quick to do at the same time. At most they take 45 mins even if they include a fair amount of trash and up to 6 bosses. I’m hoping they’ll all turn to be like this.

Still no guild in sight

At the moment I’m debating whether or not to find a casual guild in TSW. My first priority remains Swtor and Snark side but having a few people around for instances runs would be nice and allow me to avoid the worst of the pug horrors. I’m keeping an open mind about this but so far, I haven’t seen any guild that clicked.

So that’s it for now, next time I hope I’ll be a bit more structured.

We have an ultra casual cabal, a lot of our members still happen to be playing swtor as a main game as well. But we’re Templar and I seem to recall you going dragon? In any case, you can always join the tsweets chat channel which has a lot of bloggers and tweeters. That way you don’t have to be in a cabal but still get the social benefits.

I managed to run Inferno first (I haven’t seen the entrance to Polaris?) with a group that had a few people that were new to the game (me mainly) and a few others. It didn’t go smoothly, but we completed it and had fun.

I have to admit, it was interesting to see it was more like a series of boss fights without much in the way of trash pulls – which is nice. Might have been cool to have a fight against a mass of minor demons just to give you that overwhelming feeling of doom.

I’m enjoying it when I get a chance to play :)
