This is pretty much exactly what I expect to happen as well. Except that I think GW2 will still be better off than many once the hype dies down, simply because of its payment model. Nobody can moan about declining subscription numbers if there aren't any, or ask "is it free to play yet" when it starts out that way. I expect it to simply go (relatively) quiet without much fanfare, and Arena.net can still gleefully rub their hands together over all the box sales they got. :)

I did not have any unrealistic expectations about GW2 but I did play the beta on the weekend and I found it to be excellent. It was nice to see a developer making an effort to bring new game mechanics in to an MMO.

I did have unrealistic expectations about SWTOR and found myself very disappointed. When you strip out the spoken storyline and the Star Wars sound effects the game itself is very bland and more like a 2005 MMO.

As Pitrelli stated I am also tired of WoW clones and any MMO that tries to break out of this mould earns a place in my gaming time.

I think its very much each to their own.

Whilst GW2 isn't the Jesus MMO it is in my opinion a big step in the right direction. Unlike recent offerings it seems ArenaNet have actually created something different, it wont be for everyone but for players like me who are bored of WoW clones it seems to be a good choice to scratch the MMO itch

Agreed. 'Course to be completely honest and open, I was that type of guy when TOR was coming along. And, to be totally fair, I actually *do* believe TOR is the second coming of MMO saviors. All that being said, I'd like to think of myself as a rational dude and I'm actually happy for the folks who want to love GW2; I hope GW2 brings as much joy to them as TOR has done for me ... but I don't expect it. You'll still see lists of players crying that Arena.net 'lied to them', 'GW2 is an utter failure', and 'WoW isn't dead loolololoz' even though that was never even brought up.

I hate players sometimes.

We've got a couple of those folks in the guild - I wouldn't object, but setting a raid roster is tough when "guys, ***'s beta is coming out, I'm skipping raid tonight" is a regular event.

I'm also unsure why someone would play a beta, if games get boring after a month or two.
