On purple eyes

July 4, 2011 by lonomonkey

This is me ranting, no real point here but venting

A long time ago, back in Vanilla WoW, we used to call people with bad loot envy as having “purple eyes”. They saw the epics, they wanted the epics and it was pretty much the only thing on their minds. Although some of them were pure and unabashed loot whores, most of them were simply normal people who got caught up in the excitement of getting a few purples so they could play with the big boys. Other times, they were bad players for whom getting a few epics would prove that in-fact, they were not that awful. Whatever the reason, all they could see was the purple of the epics they wanted and all their waking time was spent thinking about it.

The phenomenon mostly went away during Wotlk “epic-fest” but with Cataclysm I’m seeing a return and it’s driving me a bit nuts. I had this conversation the other day in a pug.
-Baby dk: Wow! Cool gear man! Later, my Dk is going to be like yours.
-Me: Hum…. thanks….
-Baby dk: Man I so want to get your head and your weapon but my fail guild can’t get anything down.
-Baby dk: Hey! Is your guild recruiting? I could transfer over!

He’s not the first one to ask me questions about my gear. Heck, you can just read chat some nights and all you hear are noobs talking about wich epic they want and how their guilds are not treating them right. Maybe the reason their guilds are not treating them right is because all they hear from them is loot drama and QQ. You work your ass off to get this big boss down for the first time and the first thing you hear is that damn loot whore again complaining about how he’s not getting gear. Or how about the heavy sighs after a hard kill because someone got out rolled… kinda kills the fun for everyone.

Honestly, I’m fine with someone raiding for loot first. Some of the best and most fun players to be around were loot motivated first and foremost. But you know what? You would never have known if you didn’t ask them directly. Never a complaint, never trying to cheat the system. They understood that with time and effort, you get all the loot you could ever want.

So this goes out to all the loot whores I’ve met in pugs, all the whiners in chat and everyone else I’ve ever met who tried to play a dkp system to their advantage. Die in a fire, please.

Maybe you just need a break? Was probably some kid trying to impress you. Shallow? Well yeah, but I mean who could blame him for admiring you and your awesomeness ;)

I do know what you mean though, really you won’t get away from it if you pug at all. It goes with the territory in WoW, sadly.
